WEANS IN THE WOOD ••••

Tron Theatre, Glasgow

The pitch Trouble's afoot in Pantoland Primary where pupils are going mysteriously missing. Could it be the King's Academy up the road stealing fresh talent for its big stage spectaculars? Could it be an evil monster from deep in the forest where chav-like grey squirrels are stealing the nuts of their ginger cousins? Or could it be a self-serving plot by Fulton Funnock, a kind of anti-Willy Wonka and the "nasty son of a baker"?

The verdict Forbes Masson has cornered the market in meta-panto (admittedly, a genre he pretty much invented) and continues to delight in his fourth seasonal Tron show on the trot. As fresh, funny and feverish as Fulton Funnock's fondant fancies, Weans in the Wood is at once a deconstruction and a celebration of the art of panto. Gordon Dougall's seven-strong cast are tremendous, Masson's songs are a hoot and, if the King's Academy ever does steal this brilliant team, there'll be national mourning in Tartania.
