CHARLOTTE'S WEB ••••

Citizens's Theatre, Glasgow

The pitch Failing to grasp the realities of her father's farming business, young Fern rescues the runt of a pig litter, calls him Wilbur and watches him grow into a piece of prime pork. The only thing keeping him from the frying pan is Charlotte, a sympathetic spider, who spins enigmatic words in her web and impresses the humans who believe it is Wilbur's work. Winning a special prize at the fair, the pig realises Charlotte's days are numbered and learns a lesson about friendship.

The verdict A story in which your title character dies and your hero does little more than look cute is an odd one to dramatise, but Joseph Robinette's adaptation of the EB White classic - with added Scottish-isms in Jeremy Raison's good-looking production - keeps things lively. The songs are not great and it's a shame this musically gifted ensemble don't get to play live all the way through, but there are engaging performances from the whole cast, including Tom Freeman and Veronica Leer. Give it a spin.
